Canada extends eligibility period for online study of PGWP applicants

Canada extended the eligibility period for online study of PGWP applicants: Studying online is usually not covered under a post-graduation work permit (PGWP), but things have changed since the onset of the pandemic. International students have completed 100% study online from outside Canada and will continue to receive PGWP after the program is complete.

Extension of Online Eligibility Period

Canada has extended the period for international students to study online from August 31, 2022, to December 31, 2021. Canada initially implemented it as part of a coronavirus-related measure in 2020. So international students affected by the pandemic will continue to be eligible for the PGWP.

The Government of Canada website states that even if you complete it twice, the rules will apply if your program is in progress or started between March 2020 and the summer of 2022. The degree program should be from a qualified Designated Learning Institution (DLI). It should also meet PGWP requirements. The minimum duration of the program is 8 months. Study hours outside Canada after August 31, 2022, and study hours spent prior to applying for a study permit are not counted during the PGWP period.

The length of your study is important for both your PGWP eligibility and the length of time your PGWP is valid. If the course is more than 8 months and less than 2 years, PGWP is valid for the duration of the course. For more than 2 years, PGWP can last up to 3 years.

Journey From PGWP to Canadian immigration

Work and study experience in Canada can be of great help in immigration applications. One Statistics Canada report says that 6 out of 10 international students (first-time study abroad permit holders) who worked during or after studying abroad become permanent
Canadian residents. Certain business class immigration routes place a great deal of emphasis on work experience in Canada. These include the Express Entry, Quebec Experience Program (PEQ), and Provincial Nominee Program (PNP),. Some programs even need it.

For example, the Canadian Experience Class is an express entry management program that requires one year of work experience in Canada in a qualified professional. PEQ is a popular road for international graduate students who speak French in Quebec. PNP also opens immigration routes for people who are not eligible for Express Entry.
PGWP is a public work permit. This means you can use PGWP to work for any employer in any profession in Canada. This is a one-time transaction. It cannot be extended or renewed.

However, after you get it, you’ll be able to work anywhere in Canada. Studies suggest that both Canadian work and research experience can increase the potential income of immigrants. These reasons make PGWP a highly sought-after work permit. It opens the door to opportunities in Canada.
